Here are some of the possible places families can receive free or low cost food over the school summer holidays.

Exeter

Summer Cookery Club, St Sidwell’s Community Centre, Exeter

There will be Young Chefs Cooking and Craft Courses that will run for four weeks. These are taking place during the summer holidays and are free programmes open to children eligible for free school meals. Participants learn cooking skills, make healthy meals together, and use crafts and other activities to record recipes and learn about nutrition and where food comes from. There will also be a trip to West Town Farm.

20th-24th August (Exeter).

Health and Local Food for Families (HALFF)

HALFF is a registered charity set up to help people cook delicious healthy food for themselves and their families.  The activities are FREE of charge and are run in: Axminster, Bridport, Chard, Cranbrook, Crewkerne, Exmouth, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Seaton, Sidmouth.

They offer services to people: weaning their baby, cooking for children, living alone, cooking for others, cooking on a budget, lacking confidence in cooking, want to be more healthy or need to lose / gain weight.  Please contact to learn what may be available over the summer holidays

Meet on a Saturday morning 9-10am. They offer food on a donation basis at Belle’s Place, Ilfracombe.

During the summer months they are unable to provide a meal due reduction in supplies in July/August. However what food they have is available for anyone for free.

North Devon Homes

Operate a youth club which meets throughout the school holidays in both Forches area of Barnstaple (Monday) and Slade Valley in Ilfracombe (Wednesday). The Youth Club is open to all children and includes:

  • A Junior Youth Club (ages 6–8 years). Activities include games, crafts, table tennis and much more. Cost 20p, snacks included. Every Monday 4.30-5.30pm at Forches Children Centre, Forches Avenue, Barnstaple
  • Youth club for 9-20 years with activities to suit every age. Monday evenings 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, at Forches Children Centre, Forches Avenue, Barnstaple from 16 July onwards.  Cost 50p per session, food provided. Youth club activities include giant board games, arts and crafts, table tennis, pool, Wii games and team games.
  • Slade Youth Club, Ilfracombe for 9-20 years. Every Wednesday evening 6.30-8.30pm at the Vision Centre, Slade Valley Road. Cost 50p per session, food provided.  Youth club activities include giant board games, arts and crafts, table tennis, pool, Wii games, outdoor sports, team games.

Western Devon

Holsworthy Food and Drop in Centre

Open on Wednesday afternoons in the Manor Suite, at the back of the Memorial Hall between 2pm and 4pm.  

People with vouchers (CHIT) can collect free food parcels.  These vouchers are issued by organisations including Social Services, Police, the Rector or the Health Centre.

Anyone is free to drop in to discuss problems or to socialise.

During the summer holiday Make Lunch Kitchens are being opened to provide free, healthy, cooked food for children. In Tiverton we are extending this to include families who have at least one child under the age of 11.
