Screening

Why is it an issue?

Access and use of screening services for cancer and other conditions varies across Devon, with lower levels in some areas and groups, including persons with learning disabilities.

What is the position in Devon?

Uptake of cervical screening (82.2%) and breast screening (80.6%) in Devon are above the national average, but there is also considerable variation within the county, with cervical screening rates by GP practice ranging from 71% to 91%, with low uptake in deprived areas.  Uptake of screening amongst adults with learning difficulties is also low at around 30-40%.

What is the evidence of effective interventions?

Screening programmes will only be implemented when there is strong scientific evidence for the programme based on the condition, the test, the treatment options and effectiveness and acceptability of the programme.  To address health inequalities screening programmes must be effective at targeting vulnerable groups and communities.
