Devon Annual Public Health Report 2013-14

This is my seventh annual report on the health of the population of Devon, and the first report which reflects the move of the responsibility for local public health away from the NHS to Local Authorities. The Health and Social Care Act 2012 set out new arrangements for public health which mean that services to improve the health of local people and reduce health inequality are funded by a ring-fenced grant from Public Health England to the 152 upper-tier and unitary local authorities in England. It is now a statutory duty of the Local Authority to publish their Director of Public Health’s independent assessment of the health of the people of Devon.

The strong working relationship with the NHS continues through the “core offer” of healthcare public health support from Devon County Council to the two Clinical Commissioning Groups which straddle the Devon County Council area, the North East and West (NEW) Devon NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, and the South Devon and Torbay NHS Clinical Commissioning Group.

This year’s report reviews health in Devon after the first year with public health now in Devon County Council and looks to the future.
